Education

Expand Vocabulary School => Primary school

=> Middle school /junior school /junior high /secondary school

=> High school /senior high /secondary school (secondary school can refer to both middle school and high school)

=> College /university (university has more majors like Nanjing University while college is usually specialized in some field like Ying Tian College, college can also refers to subsidies or branches in one university)

=> College /Faculty (Here college means the subsidies or branches in one university) => Institute (college or some research places)

=> Church affiliations (some school funded by churches, e.g., Hong Kong Baptist University)

Students

=> Kids /children (students in kindergarten)

=> Primary school students /pupil (pupil also refers to students who are under 18) => Teenage /adolescence /youth (teenage specially refers to students aged 13-19, because their English spelling contains “teen”; adolescence or youth are more general)

Headmaster/Headmistress (Male/Female) => Principal /president (same as headmaster) => Dean (the manager of one college)

=> Associated dean (like vice dean or somebody who is in charge of a special field, like associated dean in career service)

Class

=> Course /Lecture /Session /Seminar /workshop (Lecture often refers to big class, while session, seminar or workshop usually refers to small class)

=> Time Table /Curriculum /Schedule (like class schedule in which you can see the arrangement of all classes)

Dorm

=> Dormitory /student house /student flat /student apartment /hall of residence

Develop (better describing oneself)

=> Cultivate /foster /build up /mold (develop ability from start, usually describing teachers or parents educate their children)

=> Improve /strengthen /enhance (improve a certain skill based on basic foundations)

When they fail the exam, they have to do the makeup exams or even retake the course.

7) Some courses need extensive reading; they need to be learnt by heart. One or two day’s intensive study or memorizations does not make sense.

8) Some diligent students tend to study the whole night before exam. Nevertheless, staying up late is detrimental both physically and mentally. We should reverse the trend that some students study mechanically for the sake of receiving high marks. After all, having strong physical well-being is equally important as performing well academically. Moreover, as the saying goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

9) Some students do not like College Entrance Examination. They prefer to get quality-oriented education rather than exam-oriented education. They are expecting a revolution on the present educational system.

10) The media has raised considerable concern about the poor students who cannot afford the high tuition in college. Some students need to get loans or sponsorships to complete their college education. Some earn money by taking part-time jobs.
