In a world where image is everything, people are always looking for ways to make themselves look cool, and here are some of the ways they do it.
The first thing people do to try to improve their image is to buy a sports car or a sports bike, because some people see these things as status symbols.
Some people also think the way they dress will make them seem cool, so they buy the latest fashions, hoping that others will think they are cool because they are at the cutting edge of (处于……的最前沿) fashion.
Many people will listen to the new big hits (成功的歌曲), thinking that knowing what is new and popular in music will make them appear cool to others.
In recent years many people have decided that if you want to look cool, you have to belong to a gym. The people in the gym who are there just to have a good body shape in order to look cool are always easy to spot.
In fact, coolness isn’t about what you listen to, wear or ride. It is about who you are as a person. Usually if you talk to someone who is considered cool, they aren’t trying to be cool; they just do things that interest them and don’t care
what others think. Being cool is about living life to its fullest, and in doing this you will find others with the same interests and these people will think of you as cool.
So the key to being cool is to make friends with people who enjoy the same things you enjoy and in doing so you will find that as your self-image increases, your need to be cool decreases, and then you will be cool.
56. According to the passage, many people think that the following will make them look cool EXCEPT _____.
A. their dressing B. their high social status
C. their knowledge D. their body shapes
57. In the author’s opinion, _____.
A. driving a sports car is cool
B. people who are cool live a rich and colorful life
C. people who are cool care about what others think of them

A. should make friends with as many people as possible
B. must have enough money to buy fashionable things
C. should make every effort to help others
D. should make friends with people who have the same interests as you
59. The whole passage is mainly about _____.
A. ways to look cool
B. the benefits of regular exercise
C. how to make friends
D. ways to lead an interesting life
B
“You’re wrong!” “Be quiet!” “Stop it!” “I hate you!”
When you are fighting with someone in your family, it’s hard to figure out what to do. Here are some tips on family fighting.
If you’re upset or angry, try to keep cool. Sometimes, the more you show
your anger, the more the person you’re fighting with wants to annoy you. Try coming up with an idea that can solve your conflict or problem so it doesn’t happen again.
If you feel like you’re so angry that you could burst, go to your room and punch (用拳猛击) your pillow, go out and run a lap around the block, or find a place outside to play baseball. Or just find a quiet place and relax. Count to 10 and breathe slowly and deeply. When you’re calm, try talking things out with the person you’re arguing with. You’ll probably feel much better and more in control than you did before.
Even if you’re angry at someone in your family, you should never push or kick. You could really hurt or injure the person, besides causing him or her to get angrier and the argument to get even worse. If someone physically hurts you, it’s important to tell a parent. It’s also important to tell an adult you trust if your parents ever hurt you.
If you think your family needs to work on this, you could call a family meeting to talk about it. Sometimes, your parents may ask everyone to visit a family counselor (顾问) to talk about the problems and get advice from a professional on how to deal with the fighting in your family. It’s not always easy to stop families from fighting, but by working together, it can be done.
60. The first paragraph is perhaps _____.

Although musicians had been recording fiddle tunes (known as Old Time Music at that time) in the southern Appalachians for several years, it wasn’t until August 1, 1927 in Bristol, Tennessee that country music really began. There, on that day, Ralph Peer signed Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family to recording contracts for Victor Records.
Known as the “Father of Country Music”, James Charles Rodgers was born in Meridian, Mississippi on September 8, 17. Always in ill health, he became a railroad worker, until ill health caught up with him and he was forced to seek a less hard occupation. An amateur (业余的) entertainer for many years, he became a serious performer in 1925, appearing in Johnson City, Tennessee and other places.
In 1926, Rodgers and Carrie, his wife of 6 years, moved to Asheville, North Carolina, and organized the Jimmie Rodgers’ Entertainers, a hillbilly band having Jack Pierce (guitar), Jack Grant (mandolin / banjo), Claude Grant (banjo), and Rodgers himself (banjo).
Upon hearing that Ralph Peer of Victor Records was setting up a portable recording studio in Bristol, on the Virginia-Tennessee border, the Entertainers headed in that direction. But due to a dispute within their ranks, Rodgers eventually recorded as a solo artist, selecting a romantic ballad (民歌), “The Soldier’s Sweetheart”and a lullaby (摇篮曲), “Sleep, Baby, Sleep” as his first offerings. Rodgers, who died in 1933, never appeared on any major radio show or even played the Grand Ole Opry during his lifetime. But he, Fred Rose, and Hank Williams were the first persons to be elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1961, which shows his importance in the history of country music.

D. James Charles Rodgers and country music
65. What is “Victor Records”?

Facial attractiveness and smell give us quite different messages about how to select mates, new research has shown. Previous research on smell suggests that humans prefer smells from potential partners who are genetically (遗传方面) dissimilar. But new research in which women valued the facial attractiveness of men suggests the exact opposite. So sight and smell appear to be giving quite different messages about which partners to choose.
The new research investigated possible links between mate preference and the major histocompatibility (组织相溶性) complex (MHC) — the gene, unique to each individual, which helps our body to distinguish native from alien cells.
The theory is that humans avoid the dangers of inbreeding (近亲繁殖), and maximise the chances of having genetically fitter children, by selecting partners who have a vastly different MHC from their own.
Subtle effects
Smell experiments in humans have broadly given the same message, showing that body smell is more appealing in people with vastly differing MHC. But a new research in which women rated the attractiveness of men’s faces has opposed the trend, showing that women preferred faces of men with similar MHC.
Craig Roberts of the University of Liverpool and his colleagues investigated 92 women and 75 men, and recorded differences in their MHC by analysing DNA from blood samples. Then each woman was asked to rate photographs of six men,
three with similar MHC and three with different MHC.
The results showed that the women preferred men with similar MHC. The preference applied both to long and short relationships, but was strongest for potential long term relationships.
Cultural advantages
Although the results appear to disagree with those applying to smell, Roberts and his colleagues offer an explanation to resolve the paradox (矛盾的事), based on the idea that friends and relatives — despite having similar MHC — can offer cultural and social advantages in child raising.
The team suggests that “filtering” (过滤) for mates takes place at two levels — the first based on facial likeness to select someone not too distantly related, and the second based on smell, essentially to avoid inbreeding.
68. Which of the following is NOT true about MHC?
A. It is a gene that exists in each human body.
B. It is a unique gene to everyone.
C. It is the gene that helps humans decide which partner is fittest.
D. It is the gene that helps us to distinguish native from alien cells.
69. The underlined word “maximise” in the 3rd paragraph probably means “_____”.
A. increase B. reduce C. ignore D. refuse
70. According to Roberts, a possible explanation for the paradox is that _____.
A. people can be classified by analysing DNA from blood samples
B. similar MHC can offer cultural and social advantages in raising children
C. people are tending to value culture advantages more than facial likeness
D. people with similar MHC can benefit their children with different cultures
71. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A. How to choose fittest mates
B. Women have different views of choosing mates from men
C. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
D. Beauty is in the nose of the beholder

There are other planets besides Earth in the sun’s family. The word planet means “wanderer”.
When the people of ancient times studied the sky, they gave names to the groups of stars they saw. They saw some “stars”, however, that did not stay in any group. These “stars” came to be called wanderers, or planets. Finally, people realized that these “stars” were not stars at all, but bodies, like Earth, that keep traveling around the sun. They seem to wander from star group to star group because of their journeys around the sun.
Planets look to people like stars, but they are really very different. Stars are very, very hot. They shine with their own light. Planets do not shine with their own light. They shine only because the sun is shining on them.
Moonlight, as most people know, is secondhand sunlight. The moon only reflects the light that shines on it from the sun. The light from planets is secondhand sunlight, too.
Of the other planets, only five can be seen with the naked eye (肉眼). People of ancient times knew of only five “wandering stars”. The other planets were not discovered until after telescopes were invented. The planets that are visible without a telescope are the Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The others are Uranus and Neptune.
The planets keep traveling in their same orbits (轨道) around the sun century
after century. They do not stray(偏离) from their path because the sun is pulling them with so much force that they cannot escape. Scientists call the force gravity.
It would seem that if the sun is pulling the planets with so much force, the planets would fall into the sun. They do not because they are moving too fast. Each planet moves with a speed that just balances the pull of the sun. The outer planets move more slowly than those closer to the sun.
Many of the planets have moons (卫星) that travel around them as they travel around the sun. Earth has one moon. Mercury and Venus have none. Jupiter, in contrast, has twelve moons. Mars and Neptune have two. Uranus has five, and Saturn has nine.
72. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A. The secret universe
B. Planets in the sun’s family
C. Stars and planets
D. The meaning of planet
73. According to the passage, Jupiter _____.
A. has more moons than other planets
B. can’t be seen with the naked eye
C. has strayed from its path
D. will disappear within several years
74. Compared with a star, a planet _____.
A. changes its speed
B. doesn’t have light themselves
C. moves around the earth
D. is easier to fall into the sun
75. The passage suggests that studying the sky _____.
A. began with the invention of the telescope
B. has never stopped since long ago
C. is not so important as economic development
D. didn’t really interest people in the past

Almost at the same moment, they saw a bird falling down to the ground, badly wounded. Just then a young man appeared with a gun, looking for something. They realized that it was the young man who shot the bird. In order to save the poor bird, they picked it up and ran away before he could find it. After that, they took it home. They looked after the bird and fed it with the best food. Soon it was well again. Then they took the bird to the wild and set it free.
Birds are people’s friends. It was right for Xiao Ming and his classmates to protect the bird.
