How to protect child Web fans from unsuitable material on-line while encouraging them to use the internet has long been discussed in the US.
For some parents the internet can seem like a jungle, filled with danger for their children. But jungles contain wonders as well as hazards and, with good guides, some education and a few precautions( 预防措施 ), the wilds of the internet can be safely navigated. “Kids have to be on-line. If we tell our kids they can’t have access to the internet, we’re cutting them off from their future,” said an expert.
Most kids have started to learn to use search engines. Many of them are great for finding tons of interesting Internet sites, and they also find places where you might not want your kids to go. There are search engines designed just for kids. A certain software contains only sites that have been selected as safe. But the most popular that was to limit access would be to use what is known as a “ content screener (过滤器 ).” But this can’t be wholly reliable(可靠的 ), and the best thing parents can do is to talk to their kids and let them know what’s OK or not OK to see or do on the Internet. Another way is that Mum or Dad is nearby when the child is surfing the Internet.
A few other tips:
Don’t put the PC in a child’s room but keep it in an area where Mum or Dad can keep an eye on things. That also makes the Internet more of a family activity.
Ask our child what he or she has been doing and about any friends they make on- line.
Tell your child not to give on- line strangers personal information, especially details like address or phone number.
And tell your children never to talk to anyone they meet on- line over the telephone, send them anything, accept anything from them or agree to meet with them unless you go alone. 56 The underlined word navigated probably means________. A. designed B. invented C. taught D. guided 57 The best way to protect children from improper materials is _______. A. to keep watching the children’s activities B. never buy a computer for the children
C. to be nearby whenever they are surfing the Internet D. to educate the children to tell right from wrong 58 We can infer from the passage that _______. A. Internet does great harm to both the grown-ups and the children B. a child who is on-line shows little interest in their lessons
5
C. Internet has caused many children to fall behind others in their study D. Internet contains lots of harmful sites 59 The passage tells us most about ______. A. software B. good guides
C. precautions D. education

Recently, a professor of philosophy ( 哲学 ) in the United States has written a book called Money and the meaning of life. He has discovered that how we deal with money in our day-to- day life has more meaning than we usually think. One of the exercises he asked his students to do is to keep a record of every penny they spend for a week. From the way they spend their money, they can see what they really value in life.
He says our relation with others often becomes clearly defined ( 确定) when money enters the picture. You might have wonderful relationship with somebody and you think that you are very good friends. But you will know him only when you ask him to lend you some money .If he does , it brings something to the relationship that seems stronger than ever before. Or it can suddenly weaken the relationship if he doesn’t. This person may say that he has a certain feeling, but if it is not carried out in the money world, there is something less real about it.
Since money is so important to us, we consider those who own a lot of
money to be very important. The author interviewed some millionaires in researching his book.
Question: What is the most surprising thing you have discovered about being rich, because you are a self-made man?
Answer: The most surprising is how people give me so much respect. I am nothing. I don’t know much. All I am is rich. People just have an idea of making more and more money, but what is it for? How much do I need for any given purposes in my life? I n his book the professor uncovered an important need in modern society: to bring back the idea that money is an instrument rather than the end. Money plays an important role in the material world, but expecting money to give happiness may be missing the meaning of life. 60 According the first paragraph, people have not realized ______. A. how important money is in their day-to day life
B. how one spends money shows what is important to him. C. that money is more important than their philosophy of life
D. that their understanding of life is more important than money
61.The author seems to believe that asking your friend to lend you some money ______. A. is a good way to test your friendship B. will do harm to your friendship C. will strengthen your friendship
D. is a good way to break off your friendship
62. What does the American professor of philosophy want to explain in his book?
A. Money is an end B. money is a means C. money is everything D. Money is unimportant 63.Which of the following might the author disagree ?
A. Money is important t in modern society
B. The meaning of life does not completely lie in money C. Wealth will surely bring the owner happiness
D. Happiness is not the necessarily the result of wealth
C
Body language, if you look for it, is all over the place. When two people like each other,
6
they show it. Boys and girls keep their bodies straighter. Sagging ( 松垂的 )skin and pouches ( 眼袋 ) under their eyes may go away. Eyes are bright. Skin may be pinker(粉红的 ). And each dressed up neatly. The girl works with her hair. The boy combs his hair, straightens his tie---or his shirt--- and pulls up his shocks. If the couple is going with each other, they look at each other a lot. They tilt ( 斜着 ) their heads. A girl may cross her legs or lift her chest. And she may show her palm ( 手掌 ).Most of the time girls never show their palms .But when she is interested in a man, she shows her palm all over the place. She may even cover a cough from a cigarette by holding her palm out. The boy and girl are telling each other, and the world, that they are “that way ” about each other.
Words are only part of talking. The rest takes in body movements, dress, and, of course, the tone of the voice. Recently I went to a meeting of some teachers. Two teachers were arguing. What the lady was saying was polite enough. Her voice, though, gave her away. It kept getting higher and more angry by the minute. She was saying--in words--- that there are two sides to the matter. But what he was really saying with her tone of voice---- was “ I hate you!” When the man told her that she was showing anger by her voice and her whole body she didn’t agree. She has no knowledge of her real feelings. But her body language told the story. .You can see body language used __________. A. only between boys and girls B. between lovers and sweethearts
C. at homes of married couples D. everywhere you go
65.The boy and girl are telling each other, and the world, that they are “ that way ”. “ That way ”can be replaced by __________.
A. the way they say B. the manner they act in C. in love D. talking about love
66.Which of the following joins in helping you express yourself when talking ? A .The time B The right place C. Body movements D. Your dress 67. The tone of the voice _________. A. always helps one’s talking
B. may sometimes give away one’s real feeling C. is always against one’s feeling
D. always agrees with what one is saying
D
I met Phyllis at camp last summer, right after my graduation. While in the sixth grade, I took a test into Creston Art School. When I hadn’t done well, I was very disappointed. I felt even more terrible when Phyllis told me she was to learn in Creston.
“I know about Creston. In fact, I took the entrance exam a few months ago.” I said, sounding cool. “ You did, Pamela ?What happened? ”
I didn’t want her to know the truth. So I said “ They wrote me a special letter, saying they would like me to come but that I live too far away. They just don’t think it’s right for me to travel so much.”
Why did I have to tell her that story? I decided to tell her the truth. But not now. I’d find the time---- some other time. However, I didn’t seem to find the right time to tell her. Then suddenly, it was the day before the end of camp. Phyllis and I sat in the woods drawing the lake.
“ Your drawing is better than mine. How lucky you are to study in Creston.” I said.
Then Phyllis spoke, “ Pamela , you can try for Creston again in the Spring. Don’t feel bad about not getting in.”
7
So she knew! But actually she never said,” You are a big liar (说谎的 ).You never got into Creston.
Last week I went to visit Phyllis. Her friend Joyee came over to meet me. “Where do you go to school ?” she asked me.
And without even feeling bad, I said , “ I go to Mayfair, I wanted to go to Creston, but I didn’t get in. So I’m taking the test again this year. Maybe next time I will make it”. “ I hope so.” Said Joyee .
“I do, too.” Phyllis said, smiling at me.
68 Why didn’t Creston accept Pamela as its student ? A .Pamela lived far away from Creston
B. Creston didn’t like its students to tell lies C. Pamela didn’t pass the test
D. Something unexpected happened to Pamela
69 After Pamela lied to Phyllis about her reason for not getting into Creston, she ______. A. planed to tell her the truth sometime later B. wanted to tell her the truth right away C. decided to hide the truth
D. could find no time to talk to Phyllis
70 When Pamela said “ Maybe next time I’ll make it,” she meant she would ________. A. try another art school B. managed to pass the test C. go to another camp D. make new friends 71. From the passage we know _________. A. Phyllis was very kind to Pamela B. Phyllis hated Pamela for lying to her
C. Pamela felt terribly nervous when she told Joyee that she didn’t get into Creston D. Pamela would never try for Creston again
