Motherhood may make women smarter and may help prevent dementia(痴呆) in old age by bathing the brain in protective hormones(荷尔蒙) , U.S. researchers reported on Thursday.

Tests on rats show that those who raise two or more litters of pups do considerably better in tests of memory and skills than rats who have no babies, and their brains show changes that suggest they may be protected against diseases such as Alzheimer’s(早老痴呆症). University of Richmond psychology professor Craig Kinsley believes his findings will translate into humans.

―Our research shows that the hormones of pregnancy(怀孕) are protecting the brain, including estrogen(雌激素), which we know has many neuroprotective (保护神经的) effects,‖ Kinsley said.

―It’s rat data but humans are mammals just like these animals are mammals,‖ he added in a telephone interview. ―They go through pregnancy and hormonal changes.‖

Kinsley said he hoped public health officials and researchers will look to see if having had children protects a woman from Alzheimer’s and other forms of age-related brain decline.

―When people think about pregnancy, they think about what happens to babies and the mother from the neck down,‖ said Kinsley, who presented his findings to the annual meeting of the Society of Neuroscience in Orlando, Florida.

―They do not realize that hormones are washing on the brain. If you look at female animals who have never gone through pregnancy, they act differently toward young. But if she goes through pregnancy, she will sacrifice her life for her infant — that is a great change in her behavior that showed in genetic alterations(改变) to the brain.‖

It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone.

The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries(食品杂货),saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.

I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, and then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way

4

for someone they have never met before.

People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性) as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.

C. It was a nice Kona 18 speed. D. They used it for work and daily life. 32. We can infer from the text that _______. A. the couple worked 60 hours a week. B. people were busy before Christmas C. the stranger brought over the bike D. life was hard for the young family.

33. How did people get to know the couple’s problem? A. From radio broadcasts.

B. From a newspaper. D. From a stranger.

C. From TV news. 34. Which of the following is TRUE?

A. The author’s husband often parked the bike beside the back door. B. The author used to get to work by bike.

C. Several strangers offered bikes to them, but they only accepted one of them. D. Somebody had stolen their bike before, but soon returned it to the author. 35. What do the couples learn from their experience? A. Strangers are usually of little help. C. News reports make people famous.

B

I entered high school having read hundreds of books. But I was not a good reader. Merely bookish, I lacked a point of view when I read. Rather, I read in order to get a point of view. I

5

B. One should take care of their bike. D. An act of kindness can mean a lot.

searched books for good expressions and sayings, pieces of information, ideas, themes—anything to enrich my thought and make me feel educated. When one of my teachers suggested to his sleepy tenth-grade English class that a person could not have a ―complicated idea‖ until he had read at least two thousand books, I heard the words without recognizing either its irony (嘲讽) or its very complicated truth. I merely determined to make a list of all the books I had ever read. Strict with myself, I included only once a title I might have read several times. (How, after all, could one read a book more than once?) And I included only those books over a hundred pages in length. (Could anything shorter be a book?)

There was yet another high school list I made. One day I came across a newspaper article about an English professor at a nearby state college. The article had a list of the ―hundred most important books of Western Civilization.‖ ―More than anything else in my life,‖ the professor told the reporter with finality, ―these books have made me all that I am.‖ That was the kind of words I couldn’t ignore. I kept the list for the several months it took me to read all of the titles. Most books, of course, I hardly understood. While reading Plato's The Republic, for example, I needed to keep looking at the introduction of the book to remind myself what the text was about. However, with the special patience and superstition (迷信) of a schoolboy, I looked at every word of the text. And by me time I reached the last word, pleased, I persuaded myself that I had read The Republic, and seriously crossed Plato off my list.

36. On heating the teacher's suggestion of reading, the writer thought _______. A. one must read as many books as possible B. a student should not have a complicated idea C. it was impossible for one to read two thousand books D. students ought to make a list of the books they had read 37. While at high school, the writer _______. A. had plans for reading B. learned to educate himself

C. only read books over 100 pages D. read only one book several times

38. The underlined phrase ―with finality‖ probably means _______. A. firmly

B. clearly C. proudly D. pleasantly

6

39. The writer's purpose in mentioning The Republic is to _______. A. explain why it was included in the list B. describe why he seriously crossed it off the list

C. show that he read the books blindly though they were hard to understand D. prove that he understood most of it because he had looked at every word 40. The writer provides two book lists to _______. A. show how he developed his point of view B. tell his reading experience at high school C. introduce the two persons' reading methods D. explain that he read many books at high school

A month after Hurricane Katrina, I returned home in New Orleans. There lay my house, reduced to waist-high rains, smelly and dirty.

Before the trip, I’d had my car fixed. When the office employee of the garage was writing up the bill, she noticed my Louisiana license plate. ―You from New Orleans?‖ she asked. I said I was, ―No charge.‖ She said, and firmly shook her head when I reached for my wallet. The next day I went for a haircut, and the same thing happened.

As my wife was studying in Florida, we decided to move there and tried to find a rental house that we could afford while also paying off a mortgage(抵押贷款) on our ruined house. We looked at many places, but none was satisfactory. We’d began to accept that we’d have to live in extremely reduced circumstances for a while, when I got a very curious e-mail from a James Kemmedy in California. He’d read some pieces I’d written about our sufferings for state, the online magazine and wanted to give us (―no conditions attached‖) a new house across the lake from New Orleans. It sounded a good to her return, but I replied, thinking him for his exceptional generosity, then we to go back. Then the University of Florida offered to let him house to me. While he want to England on his one year, paid leave. The rent was rather reasonable. I mentioned the poet’s offer to James Kemdedy, and the next day he sent a check covering our entire rent for eight months.

Throughout this painful experience, the kindness of strangers has done much to bring back my faith in humanity. It’s almost worth losing you wordy possessions to be reminded that people

A proverb says \"One man is not good enough to live alone in the world.\" Indeed, there are many things in life which we alone cannot perform. We need friends' help. Friends are people who willingly and readily help us when we are in trouble, and show sympathy for us when we are in misery.

The benefits of friendship are limitless and sometimes invisible. For example, when we have passed the graduation examination and are looking for a job, we need experienced and reliable friends to guide us and help us on our way. Therefore, it is necessary for us to seek advice from friends.

Of course, we can make friends everywhere. However, I think the best place is school, where we are among a big number of boys and girls of our own age, so it is easy to get to know one another in a short time. Besides, we can also make friends among the people who work with us in the community.

In order to make friends, we ourselves must be honest, noble-minded and kind-hearted whereby to leave a favorable impression on others since other people observe us the same way as we do.

At the same time, we should avoid bad friends, because they always do harm to us and moreover, they are dangerous to the people around. What is even worse, they spoil our friendship with good friends. Indeed, seeking acquaintance with bad friends would be a serious mistake.
