Dear Disney, Last weekend, the four members of my family spent an enjoyable holiday at the Magic Kingdom - Disneyland. And one event made our visit seem truly magical. We got to the front of the line at Space Mountain, only to find out that our little daughter Gloria couldn't take her ice-cream on the ride. We were so excited that we all forgot ice-cream was not allowed on the ride. Gloria broke into tears and we all had no idea what to do. Then Murphy, one of the staff(员工) members, came over. She bent down and told Gloria that she would hold the ice-cream for her and give it to her when she finished the ride. Gloria said, \"Promise?\" Then she gave Murphy her ice-cream, and she completely enjoyed the ride. Sure enough, as we walked out the exit, there was Gloria's new friend with \"her\" ice-cream. Now you and I both know what happened, because we know that an ice-cream won't last twenty minutes on a summer afternoon in Florida. Murphy knew what time we would get off the ride; she went to the nearest shop and bought a brand-new ice-cream thirty seconds before we walked out the exit. Gloria said, \"Thank you,\" but I'm sure she thought it was the same ice-cream. We know that someone tried hard to make our visit special. Thanks so much for going above and beyond! Many people know the names Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison. However, most people don’t know the name of the man who invented the television, Philo Farnsworth.
Philo Farnsworth was born in 1906 and grew up on a potato farm. As a boy, he loved to learn about science, and he read a lot of science books. When he was only thirteen years old, he drew a picture of a machine that could send pictures as radio sends sounds. He got the idea from the way the potatoes were planted in the field. The potatoes grew in long lines, side by side. This made a shape in Philo’s mind. This shape helped Philo think of a way to send the TV picture onto a piece of glass. But he was poor, so Philo could not try to make his idea into a machine at that time.
Later, Philo worked at many different jobs. He worked with trees. He worked on broken radios. He worked on trains. He also worked as a street cleaner. At last, two rich men heard about his idea for television, and they gave him the money to make it. On September 7th, 1927, they watched Philo test the machine he built. When Philo turned on the machine, a small line could be seen on the glass. Philo said, “There you have it, electric television.”
Later, a big company, RCA, said they had made the first television. Philo had to spend a lot of money on lawyers to fight them. Finally, he won. Then, World War Two started in 1939. During the war, Philo spent a lot of money helping the US army instead of building up his television company. After the war, other bigger, richer companies started making televisions. In the end, Philo had to sell his company. 56. Why does the author mention Bell and Edison at the beginning of the text? A. To remember both of them. B. To prove their wisdom.

Men usually want to have their own way. They want to think and act as they like. No one, however, can have his own way all the time. A man cannot live in society without considering the interests(利益) of others as well as his own interests. “Society” means a group of people with the same laws and the same way of life. People in society may make their own decisions, but these decisions ought not to be unjust(不公平) or harmful to others. One man’s decisions may so easily harm another person. For example, a motorist may be in a hurry to get to a friend’s house. He sets out, driving at full speed like a competitor in a motor race. There are other vehicles and also pedestrians (行人) on the road. Suddenly there is a crash. There
5
are screams and confusion. One careless motorist has struck another car. The collision(碰撞) has injured two of the passengers and killed the third. Too many road accidents happen through the thoughtlessness of selfish drivers.
We have governments, the police and the law courts to prevent or to punish such criminal acts. But in addition, all men ought to observe certain rules of conduct. Every man ought to behave with consideration for other men. He ought not to steal, cheat, or destroy the property(财产) of others. There is no place of this sort of behavior in a civilized society.
66. A man cannot have his own way all the time because________. A. he may have no interest in other people
B. he has to share the same interest with the people in the same society C. his decisions are always unjust D. his decisions always harm other people 67. According to the passage, people in a civilized society should usually______. A. be honest to each other B. be cautions in doing everything C. behave in a responsible way D. punish criminal acts 68. The purpose of this passage is to_________. A. tell people how to behave in society B. illustrate the importance of laws C. teach people how to prevent criminal acts D. persuade people not to make their own decisions
69. It is implied that there will be fewer road accidents if_______. A. the drivers are more considerate(体贴的) of other people B. there are fewer cars or walkers in the street C. the motorists are not always in a hurry
D. the passengers are calm but not confused before the accidents 70. We can draw a conclusion that_______. A. the government should contribute more efforts B. the criminals should be more severely punished C. man should be more strict with himself
D. man should have more and more similar interests

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer. “Flying saucer” refers to strange objects which travel through the air at very high speeds. Thousands of people all over the world claim to have seen them. Some believe them to be spaceships form other planets. Others insist that they are a secret type of planes being built on earth. Many people believe that they are only natural phenomena happening under special weather conditions.
In the United States, the first flying saucers were reported on June 4, 1947 by a private plane pilot. He saw nine objects traveling in the sky. Each was disk-shaped and very bright. Because
6
their movements were compared to those of a “saucer skimming across the water”, newspaper recorders called them “flying saucers”.
Some weeks after the first reported sighting, the United States Air Force was given the job of looking into all the reports of flying saucers. Since the Air Force officials began their investigation of flying saucers, they have recognized most of the objects as stars, planes, man-made satellites, experimental missile, or weather phenomena. Some of the UFO reports, including photographs, were tricks made to cheat people.
All the research so far has failed to prove that UFOs are spaceships coming from the outside the earth.

Directions: Read the following passage, Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage. It was a winter morning, just two weeks before Christmas 2005. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone.
The bike was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.
People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.

Albert Einstein, a goldfish, is not your ordinary pet goldfish. He has learned to take food from his owner’s hand, swim through hoops and tubes, and even put a miniature soccer ball into a goal! It all started when Kyle Pomerleau, 9, won two goldfish at a school fair. Soon he noticed that the fish would react to his movements whenever he came near the tank. He wondered if they were smarter than he’d realized.
He and his dad decided to train Albert. They used techniques that work for other animals like dogs and killer whales.
“We wanted to show that fish could be interesting pets, not just decorations,” said Kyle’s father, Dean Pomerleau. The Pomerleaus bought a “finger soccer” kit (成套用具) from a store and put weights on the tiny net and ball so that they would sink to the bottom of the tank.
First Albert earned a food reward every time he swam toward the net. This training technique is called positive reinforcement. The fish likes the treat, so it learns to repeat the action to get additional treats.
10
Once Albert learned to go toward the net, Kyle and his dad added a new step — ball handling. Eventually Albert learned to push a ball into a goal.
The trainer learns patience and persistence, the father-son team says. It may take five or six training sessions a day for three weeks to teach a fish to swim through a hoop. Just like kids, each individual fish learns at different speeds!
The Pomerleaus set up a website so other people could see how much fun they were having with their fish project. They heard from so many people who wanted to train their pet fish that the Pomerleaus started Fish School, a small business that sells fish-training manuals (指南) and kits.
56. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. Albert Einstein in this story is a great scientist.
B. The Pomerleaus spent much money training the goldfish at first. C. All fish like swimming through a hoop or pushing a ball into a goal. D. The Pomerleaus benefited a lot from training pet goldfish.
57. The underlined word “miniature” in Paragraph 1 probably means “______”. A. tiny B. giant C. popular D. beautiful 58. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
A. the Pomerleaus are not willing to help goldfish owners
B. Albert earned a toy reward every time he learned what he was being taught C. many people are interested in training their pet goldfish D. all animals can be trained to learn new tricks 59. What is the best title of the passage? A. Methods of training goldfish. B. Pet fish learn new tricks. C. A newly-started fish school. D. The Pomerleaus’ small business. B
A lot of grown-ups worry that spending too much time playing video games isn’t good for a kid’s health.
But some doctors have noticed that kids who bring their handheld game players to the hospital seem less worried about being there. These patients also seem to experience less pain when they are concentrating on a superhero adventure or a car race.
At the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, Maryland, young patients are finding hospital visits easier to deal with, thanks to a test program called the Hospital- based Online Pediatric Environment (HOPE).
Patients in HOPE have a life-threatening condition where their kidneys (肾) no longer clean wastes from their blood. To get their blood cleaned, these kids must be hooked up to dialysis machines (透析机) at the hospital three times a week, for at least three hours each time. HOPE allows kids to play online sports, racing, and adventure games with each other. Eventually they will be able to connect with kids in other hospitals who are undergoing the same procedure (程序).
“We want to use the power of the Internet to bring together kids who feel they are isolated by their illness, and let them know they are not alone,” said Arun Mathews, the doctor who heads the program. He loves video games himself and got the idea to connect kids all over the country. Many researchers elsewhere are testing video programs that might help young patients. For example, nine-year-old Ben Duskin of San Francisco, California, who was struggling with cancer helped to design a video game where players get rid of cancer cells.
That’s all great news, because doctors already know that reducing pain and worry helps patients recover faster.
60. The underlined word “isolated” in Paragraph 6 can be replaced by . A. separated B. controlled C. conquered D. caused
61. The author’s main purpose in writing the passage is to show that . A. video games are very popular with sick kids
B. young patients are encouraged to play video games
C. playing video games is beneficial under certain conditions D. parents should care about children’s interests
11
62. Which of the following statements is NOT the sick children’s purpose of playing online video games?
A. To experience less pain.
B. To connect with kids in other hospitals. C. To know they are not alone. D. To design video games.
63. What is the best title of the passage? A. Video games and young patients.
B. Video games may help young patients relieve pain and worry. C. The power of the Internet.
D. The advantages and disadvantages of video games. C
Fans of the Internet are fond of describing it as an engine of freedom, opportunity and wealth creation. In many ways they are right: the Internet can be a limitless classroom for those ignored by formal education, and a marketplace and a discussion place for people not included in economic or political life.
The problem is that the people who could benefit most are the least likely to be connected. The digital divide between the rich and the poor prevents the benefits from flowing to the vast majority in the developing world, making sure that familiar inequalities continue in the virtual world.
One technology that promises to help bridge the divide both at home and abroad is wireless mesh networking. In basic terms, it links computers together and connects them to the Internet. In practice, it can be used to build large networks far more quickly and cheaply than has ever been possible. Networks are also providing web connections for people in developing countries that have never had effective telephone networks.
The special nature of the mesh makes it easy to start small and expand where necessary. As the mesh becomes denser, its stability increases. They are also relatively cheap to set up. Unlike phone or cable-based Internet systems, mesh networks require less physical infrastructure (基础设施) and can be fixed quickly and cheaply.
The growth of meshing will undoubtedly present new challenges. One difficulty is the law, both in the developing world, where bureaucracy (官僚作风) can prove difficult, and the developed world, where telecoms companies are strongly against citywide mesh networks affecting their business. Wireless security will also be a concern for some. . What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. A new wireless technology connects the Internet.
B. Wireless networks will connect all the countries around the world.
C. The inequality between rich and poor countries of getting information is widening.
D. An unusual way of connecting computers could benefit people who aren’t online at present. 65. Which of the following statements is NOT the difficulty that the growth of meshing meets? A. In developing countries, the local government can’t work effectively.
B. In developed countries, some companies may be against citywide mesh networks. C. Some people worry about the safety of the wireless networks. D. The technology of mesh is new and can’t be used in everyday life. 66. From Paragraph 1 we can NOT infer that _______.
A. people who have no access to formal education have the chance to learn on the Internet B. people can make money from the economic activities on the Internet
C. some people consider the Internet an engine to manage their everyday life D. people can use the Internet to discuss political problems
67. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A. The people who need the Internet most have the least chance to be connected. B. Wireless networks can connect poor people who have no telephone networks. C. It is cheaper to set up the mesh than phone or cable-based Internet systems. D. The mesh can be used to build large networks far more quickly and cheaply. D

adopting the infrared (红外线) scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers spray pesticide (杀虫剂) exactly rather than rain poison plants on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that don’t have pest problems.
Even better, Paley’s Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3,000 feet at night, an infrared scanner measured the heat sent out by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing where plants were running “fevers”. Farmers could then spot spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would.
The bad news is that Paley’s company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and long-term backers (资助者) were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and improvement in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back into operation. Agriculture experts have no doubt that the technology works. “This technique can be used on 75 percent of the agricultural land in the United States,” says George Oerther of Texas A&M. Ray Jackson, who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture. It also thinks remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade.

C. in poor physical condition D. exposed to excessive sun rays

Our environment is getting worse Our environment is getting worse for a variety of reasons.
Now there are more cars and buses on the roads, and they give off poisonous gases which result in air pollution. Factories and smokers are also responsible for air pollution.
Water pollution is another problem. Because people throw all kinds of dirty things into rivers, streams, etc., water is becoming seriously polluted. As a result, many places cannot get enough water, and there are even lots of people who fall ill because of drinking polluted water. Noise also causes pollution and it can do great harm to people’s hearing.

第二部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) A
Last October a major earthquake in northern Pakistan turned all the villages into piles of debris (碎片). And it killed thousands of people and left tens of thousands more homeless.
Life is hard for the refugees who now live in special camps set up by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). But there is some good news: more than 14,000 children in these camps go to school every day. Many of the children are attending school for the first time in their lives.
The Jagir camp in Balakot, located in Pakistan’s North-West Frontier Province, looks a lot like the other camps scattered through the disaster region. Nearly 70 families make their homes in small tents, and about 40 children attend schools.
Instead of individual classrooms for different grades, kids of all ages learn together in one big tent. They study subjects including the Urdu and English languages, Islamic religion, math, and social studies. The boys and girls feel grateful for the schools, sharing a small supply of books, pencils, and notepads.
Ten-year-old Shozad lived in one of the areas hardest hit by the quake. He is recovering from a broken leg. “I lost my friends and schoolmates in the earthquake,” he said. “And going to school helps me think about other things for the moment. My favorite subject is drawing, especially flowers.”
Organizations like the UNHCR hope to continue providing schooling for these eager students when they eventually return home.
56. The underlined word “refugees” in Paragraph 2 probably refers to _______. A. foreigners traveling in Pakistan
B. people who are forced to leave their homes because of floods, earthquakes, and so on C. children whose parents have been killed in earthquakes, floods, and so on D. people who have come to offer help to those people who are in trouble 57. It can be inferred from the passage that _______. A. no more such tent schools will be set up
B. life is hard for the refugees who live in special camps
C. the UNHCR did a lot to improve the kids’ schooling conditions D. the boys and girls in the disaster region feel grateful for the schools 58. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Life is so hard for the people in this region that many children have never attended schools. B. Kids of different ages learn in individual classrooms.
C. Now about 1,400 children in camps go to school every day in the disaster region.
D. The government of Pakistan did nothing to provide schooling for these eager children. 59. What is the author’s main tone in this passage? A. Lacking hope. B. Expecting things to improve. C. Showing upset. D. Showing care.

The months are familiar to everyone. Nearly any small child can rattle off the twelve months of the year. But how and why did the names come into being?
Every month’s name tells a story. January is named after Janus, a Roman god described as having two faces, one looking forward and one looking back. As the god of doors, he had to watch out for friends and enemies coming from either direction.
February is a form of februare, which was a Roman festival. On that day, people begged the gods for healthy children and enough crops in the next year.
March is named after Mars, whom many people have read about as the god of wars. Few people realize that at first Mars was the god of springtime. Fighters would “take the winter off” from fighting, resting while the weather was too bad for the battle. In the spring-around what we now think of as March battles would start again. From this time line, Mars soon became more well known as the god of wars than of springtime.
April is a mystery. Experts argue a lot about the origin of it.
18
May is also named after a goddess, Maika. She was the goddess of plants, because plants often begin to have flowers in May.
Not every month kept the same name over the years. The first name for July was Quintilis, “the fifth month”. August was at first called Sextilis, “the sixth month”. Likewise, September, October, November, and December were the seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth months. How did July and August get their new names? July was named after Julius Caesar, the first emperor of Rome, after he was killed in 66 BC. August was named after Augustus Caesar, Julius Caesar’s nephew.

In order to graduate from the Peabody High School, each junior student needs three years of a social science. This usually includes: Civic / African American History in the 9th grade, World Cultures in the 10th grade, and US History in the 11th grade. Therefore, students entering their senior year have usually accomplished the graduation requirements in history.
However, even if the number of history credits (学分) has been completed, students often choose a sociology course as an academic addition in the fourth year. The class of this subject is a semester (学期) long. As a social science, this unit is only for the use in a sociology class. But it can be beneficial to other studies. For example, when studying slavery, students can treat black humor as a means of survival. With knowledge of sociology, each student will gain an understanding of the historical development of black humor and how it has transformed American culture, both black and white.
In fact, students enrolled in the sociology class will use the curriculum as a case study to explore the effects of racism (种族主义) on American society. Many facts prove that this curriculum will help show students how events of the past have a powerful effect on current and future customs in American culture.
Due to scheduling conflicts, not all juniors can take this meaningful course, sociology. For those students who choose this curriculum unit, it can serve as a guide and a researcher. For other students who have no chance to enroll in it, they can work by themselves on their project with the sociology teacher as their adviser. However, what they do should be similar to the lessons planned for the enrolled students.
68. Which of the following statements about the social science is TRUE according to the passage? A. There are four types of subjects in the social science. B. All the social studies units are a semester long.
C. Students take the sociology class after entering the senior year. D. Students spend four years studying American history. 69. Students who choose sociology will ________. A. know the history of science B. learn about racism
C. benefit from other social studies D. not learn about American culture
70. The underlined word “accomplished” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by “________”. A. satisfied B. fulfilled C. produced D. decided
71. The scheduling conflicts lead to the following results EXCEPT that ________. A. some students can study sociology in a different way B. some students will fail in their graduation project C. some students can study independently
D. some students can ask the sociology teachers for help
72. According to the passage we can learn that sociology is concerned with ________.
20
A. American historical development B. current and future customs
C. the culture of black and white people D. the duties of various careers
