How's your happiness quotient (商数)? Science tells us that if you want to increase your \"happiness quotient\" every day, it's important to take time and accept the present blessings in your life.
I wanted to share a moment of feeling about some of my blessings and what's in my life to be grateful for as Thanksgiving approaches.
One of our family traditions at our Thanksgiving meal is to go around the table and let each one share something we're especially thankful for.
I'm going to recite lots of things, including that I'm grateful for my health, my loving husband, and the wonderful relationship we share. My husband joins me just
about every morning for our 3-mile walk to start our day. The exercise habit keeps our moods in check and the ups and downs of life easier to manage. We talk as we walk, sharing ideas, worries and good feelings too. Sometimes we argue a little until we figure out what to do. We always come up with something. What a blessing that is! It is so much to be grateful for. I feel I am the luckiest woman alive. It's my wish for you that you'll be able to spot something in your life. I hope yet you will savor(体味) and appreciate it.
Many of us spend the holiday with our aging parents or other loved ones. In my work at AgthgParents. com, we just reminded everyone that you never know if there will be another Thanksgiving with these loved ones. We can't take the day for granted. Just be in the moment. We suggest that you verbally (口头地) give thanks to your parents, no matter what conditions your aging parents may be in now. Do what you can to be tuned in to (了解) what you need as well as what your family needs. 21. What's the best title for the text?
A. Why I'm so luck B. How I spend my Thanksgiving Day C. Why some people are always happy D. What is \"happiness quotient\"
22. The best way the author suggests to increase your \"happiness quotient\" is A. to stay with your loved ones B. to share your experiences with others C. to find something to be thankful for D. to take every day as Thanksgiving Day
23. The word \"spot\" in Paragraph 5 can be replaced by “ ” A. create B. discover C. do D. affect 24. From the author's experiences we can infer that A. she lives a happy life B. she should thank everyone C. she has an unfortunate life D. she likes staying with the old B
We live in a world where it's often not easy to find someone to trust. A smiling person always inspires trust. Even economists consider that smiles are valuable. A smile may increase other people's trust by about 10%.
People may also smile when they are caught doing bad things. According to a study made by LaFrance and Hecht, this can in fact be to their own advantage. We have a tendency to be kinder towards those who make mistakes if they wear a smile while being caught. Even a guilty smile may help you get away pretty easily when you make mistakes.
We may also smile when we hear a piece of good news. In this case, women tend to smile more often than men. Smiling can also be a means of reducing the pain caused by a troubling situation. Even if we force ourselves to smile when we don't want to, this may be enough to lift our spirits just a little bit.
When we feel angry or anxious, our attention tends to narrow down. We can no longer see what's going on around us and we can only notice what is in front of us. But if we smile, we feel better and increase flexibility of our attention and the ability to think. Smiling can help us focus and understand better.
\"Keep on smiling, and the world will smile with you. \" One of the greatest social pleasure is to smile and be smiled to in return, especially because this comes like a natural thing.
People who smile often live longer. A study based on some pictures taken of some baseball players suggested that those who used to smile a lot survived about 7 years longer than those who did not smile very often. 25. The passage mainly talks about A. the benefit of smiling B. the occasions when you smile C. the ways of smiling D. the reasons why people smile 26. When caught doing bad things, people smile to A. admit their mistakes B. show they are excited C. avoid blame or punishment D. prove they are kind 27. According to the third paragraph, we can learn that A. men seldom smile at a piece of good news B. smiles can be helpful whatever the situation is C. we should force ourselves to smile whenever it is
D. in general, men are more likely to smile than women
28. The underlined sentence in the fifth paragraph probably means A. if we smile, it is hard to be smiled to B. if we smile, others will smile to us in return C. if we want to smile, the world will smile to us in time D. if we smile sometimes, we will make the world full of smiles C
The sea eagle is the second largest eagle, second only to the wedge-tailed eagle (楔尾雕). Generally, males are smaller than females, measuring up to 31.5 inches and 8 pounds. Females, on the other hand, are 33.4 inches long and weigh 10 pounds. The underside of a sea eagle is white while the wings are dark grey to black in color. The sea eagle can be found in Australia, India, China and Indonesia. They are often found in pairs. Their territories (地盘) ,which can be as large as 130 square kilometers, are often shared with other pairs for the purpose of hunting. But they will make their nests at least 1 kilometer from each other. The diet of a sea eagle is made up mostly of fish, sea snakes and other sea animals. They also eat dead animals if given the chance and even trouble other birds until they drop their food so that they can take them.
A male and a female will stay together for life, making a nest either in trees or on rocks if trees are limited and there is no egg predator. The female will lay 1 to 3 white eggs in the nest. The eggs will hatch after 40 to 44 days, when they are looked after by both parents, mostly the female. After they are born, the oldest of the young birds will kill its brothers or sisters in order to better insure (确保) its own survival. The chicks will remain in the nests for about 95 days before learning to fly.
The sea eagles face many threats such as loss of habitat, competition for food with wedge-tailed eagles, and poisoning. Loud noises, such as construction work, will also force them to remove to a less suitable location. So something must be done to help the sea eagle overcome the difficulties.
29. Sea eagles share their territories with other sea eagles in order to
A. develop their friendship B. get more food together C. fight with their enemy D. have more fun together 30. We can learn from the first two paragraphs that A. the sea eagle's wings are completely black B. the sea eagle likes living in a large group C. the sea eagle is usually found in America D. the wedge-tailed eagle is the largest eagle
31. What does the underlined, word \"predator\" in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. A place that is difficult to reach. B. An animal that looks very strange. C. An animal that eats other animals. D. An animal that is very common. D
During an earthquake, you need to know a thing or two on what to do. If the earthquake strikes while you're inside a house, you should lie on the floor and take cover under a strong table or other furniture. If there is no furniture you can cover your head with your arms and keep still in the corner of the room. You should remain away from windows, glass walls, or anything that can fall.
If you are in bed, stay still. Hold firmly onto your bed and make use of a pillow (枕头) to safeguard your head. You may use a doorway or shelter but only when it is close to you. Many injuries happen when people try to rush out. This means you ought to stay still in your house or perhaps wherever you are.

Remember that many earth- quake deaths outside the house come from debris (碎片), falling walls, flying glass and other falling objects. If an earthquake strikes and you are driving, you pull up to the side of the highway and stop as quickly as possible. You ought not to stop under trees, buildings or power wires. Don't stop in the middle of the street since it could trouble others.
When trapped, you shouldn't move. Your mouth should be covered with a piece of clothing or handkerchief. Do not shout whenever possible. Shouting should be employed at last to get help from rescuers. This is because it is possible for you to breathe some dirty dust.
32. If there is no furniture in the room you should stay A. near the window B. far from the door C. in the center of the room D. in the corner of the room 33. What are you advised to do if you are in bed? A. We should get up quickly and ask for help.
